David was born with Goldenhar syndrome, which is a rare congenital condition that left him without a fully developed ear on his left side. Since David was born without a full left ear, he suffered from conductive hearing loss for the first 60 years of his life.

David D with conductive hearing loss with wifeConductive hearing loss occurs when damage to the outer ear or middle ear blocks or reduces sound vibrations from reaching your inner ear (cochlea). This type of hearing loss can happen at birth or gradually over time, and typically it is caused by specific diseases and syndromes that affect the outer and middle ear development.

Over the years, David learned to cope with his hearing loss. He often times would ask someone to sit on the side of his “good ear” or turn his head in order to be included in conversations. He struggled to hear at restaurants and had a hard time listening to music or hearing his grandchildren. David decided he wanted to live his best life possible, and in order to do that, he needed help hearing.

“I hope to live 20 more, 30 more years, and I don’t want to stay inside and read a book. I want to be active. I want to live life, enjoy life. I knew I had to do all I could do to hear in the future. I knew the Baha was my chance.”

Thanks to the Cochlear™ Baha® 5 Power System, David was introduced to a new life of sound. After David was successfully hearing through his bone conduction implant system, he was able to hear more of what he had been missing out on.
