Hello everyone!

baha1

My name is Caroline Farmer. I’m a college student pursuing my degree in Biology. More importantly, I have been a Baha recipient for four years and I just upgraded to my new Baha 5 Sound Processor. I’m so excited about how small it is and all the cool things I’ll be able to do with it!

This summer, I’m taking the trip of a lifetime in hopes of meeting new people and discovering more about myself. Learning all about my new sound processor will be icing on the cake. Who knows what I will discover along the way!

My trip will take me down the east coast with the first stop in Maine (bring on the lobster!). Then, I’m off to Boston, down to New York City, Washington, DC, and then back to school in the fall. I’ll be blogging about my trip as I go, so make sure you bookmark our blog and visit every week for a new update!

Just for a little background, here is my hearing loss story:

During spring break of eighth grade, I had a severe case of bronchitis. After a week of lying in bed, I discovered that I was unable to hear out of either ear. I went around school pretending to participate in conversations and speaking very loudly, waiting for my hearing to come back. When after two weeks it didn’t, my mother took me to an ENT, who prescribed me a regimen of antibiotics and steroids. While it worked its magic on my left ear, the hearing in my right ear never came back to normal. I tried hearing aids, but everything I could hear through them sounded as if a chipmunk was trying to translate every word. So, I learned to survive despite my hearing loss, training everyone I met to walk on my left side and create hilarious moments out of misheard words.

Two years later, my mother dragged me back to the audiologist for a checkup just to make sure nothing had gotten worse. That’s when my audiologist suggested I try the Baha System. I quickly agreed and immediately fell in love with the sound quality and how I was able to hear the other half of the world that I was previously missing out on. I also loved the magnificent weirdness of a bone conduction system and how this amazing technology works – it’s completely mind boggling! So, needless to say, I didn’t hesitate to move forward. Later that year, I was implanted and the rest is history.

Wish me luck on my trip! I’m really looking forward to it and sharing my experiences with you all.

See you in a week!

Caroline
