SFS_Bus_3Cochlear is proud to announce the continuation of our sponsorship of the Hear the Music Project from Songs for Sound, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving quality of life for those who experience hearing loss. Songs for Sound is working to raise awareness of hearing health and hearing loss prevention while promoting the opportunity for people of all ages to #HEARtheMUSIC.

Songs for Sound was created by Jaime Vernon after discovering that her daughter, Lexi, was deaf. Vernon, who is married to the younger brother of Rascal Flatts lead singer, Gary LeVox, was scared that her child would never get to experience the power and pleasure of music. Lexi was implanted bilaterally with cochlear implants at 18 months, and Vernon is overjoyed that she can now share her family’s love of music thanks to the “miracle of cochlear implants.” Read more of Lexi’s story here.

The Hear the Music Project officially kicks off today, July 1st, at the Battle Creek Air Show in Michigan. The tour will travel around the country over the next year to participate in more than 200 events, including air shows, state fairs, schools, retail locations and clinics.

The tour will center on the mobile hearing station bus, which will provide free hearing screenings, equipment demos, education and ear protection.

“Due to lack of awareness and access, less than five percent of those able to benefit from a cochlear implant are being treated,” said Patricia Trautwein, VP of Marketing for Cochlear Americas. “Cochlear is thrilled to sponsor a program that combines mobile health screenings and music to shed light on the important universal issue of hearing loss, and provide access to information and testing throughout the United States.”

LeVox, Rascal Flatts vocalist, Songs for Sound supporter, and uncle to seven-year-old, Lexi, says “I know Lexi lives life to the fullest, enjoying the gift of music which can become a reality for so many others with the help of this tour.”
