School GirlIt’s time to go back to school! Starting the new school year with new teachers can be a time of great excitement…and anxiety. In addition to new clothes, school supplies, and reorganizing everyone to get back on schedule, you should also consider your child’s hearing needs at school. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), more than 70,000 children in public schools receive services to help with hearing in the classroom. Here are some great tips for getting your child ready to go back to school.

Tips to share with your teacher

  • Do not talk with your back turned.
  • Make sure your face is not blocked and can be seen when you are speaking.
  • Talk naturally, not too fast or too slow.
  • Project your voice, but do not shout.
  • Make sure you are in a room with adequate light.
  • Clearly introduce a new topic when the subject changes.
  • Summarize key points when closing a conversation.
  • When you are speaking to a group and are asked a question, repeat the question before answering.
  • Learn how to troubleshoot your student’s hearing device and replace batteries.

Tips for your child

  • Wear your hearing device at all times in school.
  • Advocate for yourself.  Ask questions when you don’t understand someone.
  • Choose a seat in the front of a room or optimally placed for your hearing needs.
  • Avoid seats near noisy equipment such as fans, heating systems, aquariums, etc.
  • Consider using an accessory or assistive listening device if needed.
  • Learn how to troubleshoot your hearing device and replace batteries.
  • Keep a supply kit for your hearing device at school with basics such as batteries, monitor ear phones, etc.
  • Meet with school administrative staff and teachers to discuss child’s specific hearing needs and consider setting up an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

Remember, you are your child’s best advocate when it comes to their hearing needs.  For additional back to school tips, download Cochlear Tips for School.
