AmeliaThe Consolla Family shares their daughter Amelia’s experience with Nucleus® Cochlear Implants.

“Amelia was born in 2006, perfectly healthy. When she was three, I noticed that she seemed to struggle to hear me. Over the course of the next few years, she had hearing aids. Amelia hit a point around five years old when gradually her hearing started declining to where the hearing aids were no longer helping her. They were magnifying sound, but she didn’t understand.  We went through the testing for cochlear implants, and she was approved.

Surgery went great. Amelia went back to school after the holidays and her teachers noticed, immediately, how much better she was hearing. The True™ Wireless accessories help her hear even better when she needs it. The Mini Mic makes it easier for her to hear because the background noise is washed out for her, and she can hear me directly. With her Aqua+, Amelia can hear me and her brother in the pool. I worry a lot less knowing she can hear me when I call her. My experience is that it’s just so much easier to communicate.”

Amelia K_275Amelia shared, “I can hear music, I can’t clean my room without music. I can hear the rain, and the birds. In the winter I can hear my boots crunching in the snow. I hear my teachers at school. I can hear voices how I think most people would hear them. I love to do gymnastics, especially the bars. I can hear my coach. And I love to hang out with my friends. I go swimming with my brother, we play Marco Polo and I can hear him. I even got to swim with the dolphins!”

“We’re a family that hangs out together, we love each other, we spend a lot of time together. Cochlear implants have been life-changing for Amelia and our family. It doesn’t even occur to me on a day-to-day basis that she has any challenges hearing. She hears like we hear. Amelia has every opportunity to do whatever she wants and live life without barriers.”
