ForwardFocus, direct connectivity, Sound Check – your new Cochlear™ Nucleus® Kanso® 2 Sound Processor has many great features that you most likely didn’t have before you upgraded from your previous device. So how do they work and how can you get started? Here we answer your top five technology questions.
Your new Cochlear Kanso 2 Sound Processor has many great new features that you most likely didn’t have with your previous device. While the User Guides that came with your sound processor are always the best place to start, let’s look at the features you’ll likely use the most so you can start enjoying the benefits of this latest technology.
What is ForwardFocus and how do I use it?
ForwardFocus1 reduces noise coming from behind you, to help you to better hear the person talking in front of you.
Once your clinician has enabled ForwardFocus, you can control it via the Nucleus® Smart App on your compatible Apple®2 or Android™3 smartphone. Turn it on in the ‘Program’ tab, for example, when you’re at a party or in a busy restaurant to focus on face-to-face conversations. When you return to your car or get back home where it’s quieter, simply turn ForwardFocus off until the next time you need it.
What can I do with the Nucleus Smart App?
Like any other app you download from App Store or Google Play, the Nucleus Smart App4 is ready to use anytime, anywhere from your compatible smartphone. It’s the easiest way to manage the settings for your Kanso 2 Sound Processor: adjust the volume, set personalised hearing goals and control how you stream audio from Cochlear True Wireless™ devices. You can even find a misplaced processor with the Find My Processor feature – something that’s likely to be particularly handy for an adventurous child.
How do I download and install the Nucleus Smart App?
It’s easy to start. Download the app from App Store or Google Play, log in with your Cochlear account and follow the instructions to pair your Kanso 2 Sound Processor with your compatible device.* If you do not already have a Cochlear Account, you can create yours by selecting the ‘Create New Account’ option within the app.

What is direct streaming and how do I start to stream calls, music and entertainment to my sound processor?
Direct streaming means that, once you have paired your sound processor to a compatible Apple or Android device, you’ll be able to hear the audio from phone calls, music and entertainment in your sound processor, without the need for any other external devices. If the phone rings, you can answer it without worrying if your Phone Clip is charged. You can listen to music, podcasts, movies and even GPS instructions via your device and only you will hear it.
- ForwardFocus can only be enabled by a hearing implant specialist. It should only be activated for users 12 years and older who are able to reliably provide feedback on sound quality and understand how to use the feature when moving to different or changing environments. It may be possible to have decreased speech understanding when using ForwardFocus in a quiet environment.
- The Kanso 2 Sound Processor is compatible with Apple and Android devices. The Cochlear Nucleus Smart App is available on App Store and Google Play. For compatibility information visit www.cochlear.com/compatibility
